[CPD Talk] New Developments in AI: Intellectual Property and other Legal Implications

Join us for an insightful talk about the latest developments in artificial intelligence, focusing on the importance of intellectual property in the digital age. We will provide an overview of AI technologies, including recent trends and strategies to minimise inaccuracies. Featuring a comprehensive overview of copyright, patent, and trademark issues related to AI-generated content. We will also address the legal challenges surrounding IP protection and best practices for safeguarding rights across various jurisdictions, including Hong Kong, Mainland China, the US, and the EU.

Anson has appeared in more than 150 court judgments (including 18 cases in the Court of Final Appeal with 13 substantive appeals) over the mere span of 9 years of full practice, reflecting the exceptional wealth of experience and exposure in civil litigation for his seniority.

Anson is experienced in handling complex questions of law, including those of great general or public importance which reached the Court of Final Appeal. For example, he has recently appeared in (among others) three civil appeals before the Court of Final Appeal dealing with important questions concerning insolvency matters, land law and equity, service out of jurisdiction and statutory interpretation.

Ronald Yu

Ronald teaches university postgraduate Regulation Technology and Intellectual Property Law classes, written books, book chapters, policy papers, articles, and responses to government consultations on AI, cross border data flows, smart cities, and IP, as well as animal conservation.

A mechanical engineer by training, he holds multiple post graduate law degrees, was a computer forensics examiner and is a co-inventor on patents in EdTech and Tokenization of IP.

He has been an advisor to the WIPO Green initiative of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) and a co-founder of Makebell Ltd, an AI startup whose platform, Makebell Studio allows users to build AI agents. For example, Makebell has built:

  • A patent analyser that summarises patents, assists with their commercialisation and getting future patents (i.e. patent prosecution)
  • An intelligent legal translation system
  • AI chatbots that answer questions on virtual asset regulation, IP policies, MPF regulations, HKEX listings and, soon, international wildlife conservation

Kenneth Yip

Kenneth Yip is a Hong Kong lawyer specialising in IT contracts, IP matters and patents. Over the last two decades, he has helped many companies and organisations to receive more than 300 US, EU, and China patents, including ASTRI. He has also been using AI to help others to comprehend patents quicker. Kenneth received his LLM from the City University of Hong Kong, LLB from the University of London, Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, and Bachelor in Applied Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Waterloo.

Kaidrian Yu

Kaidrian is a legally trained professional who has successfully bridged the gap between law and artificial intelligence over the past five years. As the AI solution architect behind Makebell Studio, he leverages his unique combination of legal expertise and technical knowledge to design innovative AI solutions for Hong Kong’s leading institutions. His portfolio includes implementing cutting-edge AI systems for prominent law firms, universities, and listed companies, demonstrating his ability to translate complex legal requirements into practical technological solutions.
