Hectar Pun SC and Anson Wong Yu Yat joined a Panel Discussion at Eversheds Sutherland on Equal Rights for LGBTIQA+

On 8th February 2024, Hectar Pun SC and Anson Wong Yu Yat joined a panel discussion hosted by Eversheds Sutherland’s Asia Diversity & Inclusion Committee that explored the evolving landscape of LGBTIQA+ rights in Hong Kong. The discussion, titled “Another Step Forward in Hong Kong’s Rainbow Journey to Equal Rights for LGBTIQA+”, was mainly on the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal’s judgment in Sham Tsz Kit v Secretary for Justice that called for the Hong Kong Government to establish an alternative framework for legal recognition of same-sex partnerships by 2025.

Hectar and Anson, who acted for the Appellant Sham Tsz Kit, joined Mr Colin Dunlop, Director, Investment Banking Legal APAC, of Barclays and Mr Joe Choy, Of Counsel, Eversheds Sutherland to discuss the implications of this ruling and what the way forward is, as well as to address the broader challenges that the LGBTIQA+ community in Hong Kong continue to face.
